TRAINING ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL HEALTH PROMOTION MEDIA IN GUNUNGKIDUL USING CANVA BEGINS WITH HIGH ENTHUSIASM FROM PARTICIPANTS

The lecturer team from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY) held a training program titled "Development of Digital Health Promotion Media for Gunungkidul Regency Using Canva" for human resources from the Gunungkidul Health Office and community health centers (UPT Puskesmas). The Community Service Program (PkM) was officially opened on Thursday, 28 August 2025, at Sere Ratu Resto Gunungkidul and was attended by 37 health workers from across the regency.
The opening ceremony began at 09.00 WIB with a prayer and the singing of the national anthem Indonesia Raya, which fostered a spirit of unity among participants and the organizing committee. A representative of the Head of the Gunungkidul Health Office, who was unable to attend in person, delivered remarks expressing appreciation for this initiative and the hope that the training would strengthen the reach and impact of health promotion, particularly in the geographically diverse region of Gunungkidul.
Dr. Sri Andayani, S.Si., M.Kom., Chair of the UNY PkM Team, explained that the training aimed to build the capacity of health personnel in utilizing Canva as a tool for developing digital health promotion media.
“Although some participants may already be familiar with Canva, this training is designed to provide deeper understanding and more practical skills, enabling them to fully utilize its features to produce engaging and accessible health promotion media,” she said. This capacity building aligns with UNY’s Key Performance Indicator (IKU) program that encourages meaningful community engagement and impact.
After a short break, the Vice Head of the Gunungkidul Health Office emphasized the importance of digital health promotion as a strategic means for public education and empowerment. Bambang Sumarno Hadi Marwoto, M.Kom., then presented the role of Visual Communication Design (DKV) in creating effective health infographics.
The next session was delivered by Fatma Agus Setyaningsih, S.Kom., M.Cs., who explained concepts of infographic design and data visualization techniques, including various infographic formats that can help convey health messages clearly and attractively.
Approaching midday, participants were introduced to practical use of Canva by Thesa Adi Saputra Yusri, M.Cs. In an interactive workshop session, participants explored Canva features and began creating health promotion infographics using real data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), with guidance from student facilitators from UNY. The enthusiastic atmosphere supported active and smooth hands-on practice.
After lunch, participants continued intensive infographic development until 14.00 WIB. At the end of the first day, participants were given an individual assignment to produce a digital health promotion media design as part of continuous learning. The session concluded with group documentation.
The training not only addressed geographic barriers to accessing health information, but also significantly improved the capacity of health personnel in utilizing digital media for effective health communication. With the skills gained, health workers are expected to independently create digital health promotion content that is visually engaging, communicative, and aligned with national and local health policies.
Day Two: Strengthening Design Mastery and Presentation of Final Works
The second day of training took place on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, with participants maintaining high enthusiasm. The morning session focused on mastering advanced tools in Canva to enhance design quality, guided by Thesa Adi Saputra Yusri, M.Cs. and Bambang Sumarno Hadi Marwoto, M.Kom.
Before entering the presentation session, lecturers provided individual feedback and refinement suggestions on participants' work to ensure professional-quality final results.
After lunch, participants presented their infographics. Each participant explained how their work communicates public health messages relevant to their respective Puskesmas. The presentation session was interactive and constructive, offering additional insights and ideas.
The training concluded with a group documentation session as the official closing. It is expected that health personnel in Gunungkidul will be increasingly confident and capable in developing innovative digital health promotion media that can reach communities more effectively through information technology.
